Successful project outcomes in site development work depend on far more than heavy equipment moving big dirt. Behind the scenes, construction surveying, GPS modeling, construction technology, and communication between teams all play an important role in keeping projects moving accurately, efficiently, and safely.

Helping support those efforts at Brubacher are two team members we’re spotlighting: Jon F., Survey Department Manager, and Anatoliy Y., Chief Technology Specialist. As part of Brubacher’s experienced in-house construction survey and technology support team, both help connect project data, field operations, equipment, and communication throughout every stage of construction.

From GPS-guided machine control and drone mapping to troubleshooting equipment systems and supporting field crews in real time, advanced construction technology continues to play an increasingly important role across every stage of a project. But for Jon and Anatoliy, the work is about much more than simply keeping up with rapidly changing technology. It is about helping teams solve problems, supporting crews in the field, and finding better ways to work together.

“We can all help each other a lot,” Anatoliy shared while discussing the collaborative nature of the work and the importance of communication between departments, field teams, and technology support. That mindset shapes how both Jon and Anatoliy approach their roles each day.

Survey Manager Jon F.
Supporting Accuracy in the Field

Jon oversees Brubacher’s survey operations, including field survey crews and office team members responsible for digital modeling and project support. His team helps support projects from the earliest stages of site development through final as-built documentation. Those efforts include site layout, GPS machine-control support, drone-based site topographic work, and helping to ensure crews have accurate, up-to-date information as projects progress.

“We’re the first people on site,” Jon explained while describing how survey and construction data support projects from beginning to end.

As projects become larger and more complex, that role has shifted and grown significantly compared to years past. Jon reflected on how surveying once required larger crews, more manual processes, and far less precise technology. Today, digital models, GPS survey equipment, and machine-control technology allow teams to work with a level of speed and accuracy that would have been difficult to imagine earlier in his career. Jon also pointed to newer tools like LiDAR mapping and drone topographic survey technology as examples of how construction surveying capabilities continue to improve. These tools can help teams gather more accurate site information, improve planning, and support faster decision-making in the field.

At the same time, the pace of construction also creates new challenges.

Jon described how information can change rapidly on active projects, requiring constant coordination between field crews, project managers, and support teams to ensure everyone is working from the latest information.

“The challenging part is to get the plans, get everything deciphered, and then get it to the crews that need it in the field so they can install it correctly,” he explained.

Connecting Technology and Operations

While Jon’s work focuses heavily on survey operations and field support, Anatoliy’s role centers on the systems and technology infrastructure that keep equipment, communications, and operational data connected across the company.

Anatoliy’s background is rooted in technology, mechanics, and problem-solving. Before joining Brubacher in 1996, he attended an agriculture and engineering technical school and later served two years in the military before immigrating to the United States with his family.

After beginning his career at Brubacher as a night-shift truck mechanic, Anatoliy transitioned into more technology-focused responsibilities and now supports a wide range of systems across the company, including grade control support, fleet technology, remote troubleshooting, equipment data analysis, telematics systems, and construction technology integration.

“What has kept me engaged over the years is that the field is constantly evolving and provides endless learning opportunities. There is always new technology, software, or equipment systems to understand and improve,” Anatoliy said.

Much of that work happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt across projects every day. Today’s construction operations rely heavily on communication between office teams, field crews, GPS systems, machine control technology, cloud-based file sharing, and equipment reporting systems. Anatoliy explained that many people outside the industry may not realize how much planning, troubleshooting, file management, and data support takes place before equipment ever begins working on a jobsite.

Continuing to Learn and Adapt

Both Jon and Anatoliy emphasized that while technology continues to advance rapidly, human experience, communication, and judgment remain essential.

“Technology helps improve safety, efficiency, and accuracy,” Anatoliy noted, “while experience allows people to make informed decisions, solve problems, and adapt to changing conditions in the field.”

That balance between innovation and experience continues to shape how Brubacher approaches construction technology and survey support today. Whether helping crews solve problems in real time, supporting project coordination, improving communication, or adapting to new systems and tools, both Jon and Anatoliy see their work as part of the greater effort of Shaping The World We Live In.

As technology continues to advance across the construction industry, both remain excited about the future and the opportunities it creates to improve efficiency, communication, and project performance even further.

For Jon, that includes continuing to help team members learn and adapt to the growing role technology now plays across nearly every jobsite.

For Anatoliy, it includes the continued advancement of remote access systems, equipment connectivity, and automation capabilities that help support safer, more efficient operations.

Despite the ongoing changes taking place across the industry, some things remain constant: the importance of teamwork, communication, and people who are willing to keep learning, improving, and helping others succeed along the way. We are grateful for the experience, dedication, and collaborative mindset both Jon and Anatoliy bring to the Brubacher team each day!
