Featured Department: Board of Directors

Steady Guidance for a Strong Future

At Brubacher, the work of Shaping the World We Live In has always depended on more than industry-leading talent, equipment, and technical skill. It’s a shared effort—one strengthened by a Board of Directors that brings together the heritage and insight of the Brubacher family with the steady, objective perspective of independent directors.

As we move into our 55th year in 2026, the Board’s role has never been more critical in guiding the company forward as a trusted excavation contractor and full-service site development partner. They help ensure the company continues “doing things the right way,” stays anchored to our mission and values, and plans thoughtfully for the future. Their balanced leadership provides clarity, accountability, and long-term direction while honoring the principles that have guided Brubacher since day one.

A Board Built on Balance: Family & Independent Directors

One of Brubacher’s greatest strengths as a family-owned company may be our intentional inclusion of both family directors and independent directors on the Board. Each group brings a perspective that strengthens the other, and together they create a balanced source of guidance to help the company navigate growth, strategic planning, and succession with confidence.

Independent director Randy Blount described this blend as “the best of both worlds.” Family directors help keep the company grounded in our core identity; independent directors bring objectivity, ask hard questions, and contribute industry experience that strengthens governance and accountability. Directors Scott Heintzelman and Larry Winkleman echoed this sentiment, noting that this mix of viewpoints creates a high-performance Board capable of honoring tradition while embracing innovation.

Brubacher President Keith Brubacher added that independent directors “challenge our thinking about possibilities, obstacles, and risks,” offering a perspective that helps leadership stay grounded and self-aware. Their input, he shared, “calibrates our view of ourselves as a business, neither thinking too highly of ourselves nor overlooking the opportunity to celebrate meaningful success.

Staying True to Our Values, Anchored for the Long Term

When asked about the Board’s most important responsibility, all three independent directors pointed to the same core idea: protecting Brubacher’s long-term success by staying aligned with our mission and values. Randy and Larry emphasized governance, guidance, oversight, and accountability. Scott described the Board’s role as helping leaders make decisions that reflect our purpose and future goals as a comprehensive sitework construction company.

Keith echoed these reflections, noting that the Board helps leadership think beyond day-to-day operations— “considering opportunities, challenges, and risks in light of our mission, vision, and values.”

With strong managers overseeing daily execution, he added, the Board plays a vital role in ensuring the company continues to honor and strengthen these commitments.

A Culture That Inspires Service

When asked what makes them most proud to serve, all three independent directors pointed to Brubacher’s culture centered on commitments to faith, family, integrity, excellence, and continuous improvement.

Scott noted that Brubacher as a company “remains committed to faith and family values,” operating in a professional, thoughtful manner while challenging itself to grow and lead the industry. Larry noted the Board’s appreciation for Brubacher’s pursuit of excellence and deliberate effort to operate with integrity and purpose. At the same time, Randy highlighted the company’s uncommon approach to service, praising Brubacher’s belief that customers should experience something “refreshing”—a promise to go above and beyond in a way that reflects deeper principles.

This culture, they agreed, is not simply inherited; it is strengthened through intentional leadership decisions supported by the Board. Keith added a note of context here, sharing that he’s most proud of the Board’s “unified focus on serving our team members and clients with excellence of competence and character.”

Moments of Meaning: Growth, Transition & Leadership Development

Looking back on their service, each independent director shared significant moments. These reflections highlight the people and transitions that strengthen Brubacher today.

For Randy, one of the most impactful shifts has been seeing Brubacher’s executive leadership team intentionally “work more on the business and a little less in the business,” allowing Keith, as President, specifically to focus more deeply on strategic planning, future opportunities, and leadership development.

For Scott and Larry, the monthly board presentations from senior managers and team members have become personal highlights. These presentations showcase the depth of talent and the professional growth happening across the organization—proof that the next generation is preparing to lead well.

Keith also reflected on several meaningful milestones from his own time on the Board—from welcoming the high-caliber professionals who have joined since 2007, to diversifying into Marcellus Shale work during challenging years, to navigating the statewide COVID shutdown. Each, he noted, strengthened Brubacher’s resilience and long-term stability.

Looking Ahead: A Future Fueled by Opportunity

When asked what excites them about Brubacher’s future, the directors spoke with confidence and clarity about the road ahead.

Randy pointed to a strong pipeline of work and the opportunities opened by the company’s recent acquisitions of Abel Construction and Abel Recon, which expand Brubacher’s capabilities and geographic reach. Scott and Larry emphasized the ongoing development of emerging leaders across the organization. They expressed confidence in the team members who are stepping into greater responsibility while staying grounded in Brubacher’s core values. Keith echoed this optimism, sharing that he is most excited to see the continued growth of the team “in competence, skills, and character” as Brubacher serves more diverse clients and markets.

A Moment of Transition

This past November marked a significant turning point as company founder Ben Brubacher retired from his Board service. Board members expressed sincere words of appreciation for his decades of steady leadership, his example of humility and faith, and the strong foundation he helped establish from the earliest days of the company.

As he fully passes the torch within family leadership, several directors noted that Ben’s influence will continue to be felt through the values he always championed—values that have shaped the Brubacher culture, relationships, and the way we approach every decision. His legacy endures not only in the company’s history but also in the people who carry that work forward.

Moving Forward with Clarity and Purpose

As Brubacher moves into its next chapter, the Board of Directors remains committed to thoughtful governance, clear oversight, and the steady leadership that helps the company do things the right way—today, tomorrow, and for the next generation.

By blending family insight with an independent perspective, the Board ensures the company continues to live out its mission, strengthen its culture, and build a future grounded in integrity, trust, and excellence. In every meeting, every decision, and every conversation, the Board’s work reflects a simple truth: Brubacher’s long-term success is shaped by people who care deeply, lead humbly, and look ahead with purpose.
