PAWC Norristown Water Main
Water Main Replacement Project Planning Overcomes Safety Hazards and Location Obstacles
Brubacher’s longstanding commitment to safety as a value was central to the completion of a critical water main replacement project in Norristown, PA, for our partners at Pennsylvania American Water Company (PAWC). With several challenging complexities, including stray electrical currents in the water system within a densely populated residential area, our Utilities Group exemplified the Brubacher approach of providing Insight. On Site., leading the way to ensure everyone’s well-being during the project’s progress.
An effort that called for extreme care and caution throughout, this project also required significant coordination between our utility crews, PAWC, and the local municipality as construction needed to be underway simultaneously in two different areas of Norristown, on Lafayette Street and Washington Street. This project included a total of 4,757 linear feet of 12″ water main pipe being installed (among other components being replaced), and minimizing disruption for residents and those who work in these areas of town was extremely important. The team had to approach the entire project as “hot work,” taking careful measurements with an amp reader at each service location before proceeding due to the electrical current that was present in the system. Utilities Project Manager & Estimator Shawn B. noted that the highest reading they encountered was an extremely hazardous 19 amps.
Staying true to our commitment to safety and providing an uncommonly refreshing experience for our partners, we kept an unwavering focus on protecting every individual as we completed a total of 322 service connections between the two locations and successfully turned the project over ahead of schedule. We are grateful to PAWC and the Norristown community for allowing us the privilege to increase safety within their water system, and we look forward to more opportunities to improve critical underground utilities infrastructure to help our local communities thrive.
