Risk Mitigation and Effective Communication Delivers High-Quality Results

As the site development contractor for this major facility expansion project, we worked closely with the construction management team at Gray Construction and owner Clemens Food Group (a leading U.S. pork processing company) to ensure a thoughtful site preparation strategy was set in place from the start. By planning ahead to mitigate risk, minimize the impact of rock, and safely navigate utilities on-site, we were able to help ensure operations within the existing on-site facility were not impacted, while keeping the project on track for successful on-time and on-budget delivery.

Probing for and quantifying existing rock was critical in laying successful groundwork on the 30-acre development site. This key step removed the stress of schedule delays, high-dollar change orders, and safety concerns that can come from project unknowns. It ensured that the path forward to addressing rock deposits was clear and factored into the site plan from the outset. Other services completed included quality grading, underground utility installation, and paving. With hundreds of other tradesmen on site and many different tasks being performed simultaneously, frequent and open communication was critical to meeting project milestones consistently.

Our team was also responsible for rerouting an existing waterway around the perimeter of the property. This required a 24/7 bypass pump to keep the water clean and flowing while the new waterway was built, piped, and ready for use. Vacuum excavation was performed to safely excavate the trench and ensure continuous operation of Clemens’ facilities, avoiding the offsite sanitary sewer force main that went through an existing parking area. As a result of risk management efforts and a dedicated team and partnership with Gray Construction, Project Smoke was completed safely, successfully, and on time to meet the needs of our client.
