Board Member
Mike is currently President of C.E.M.P. Central, Inc., a teaching, training and consulting organization dedicated to working with the construction, mining and quarrying industries to advance technology and skill in the management of mobile equipment fleets.
Mike is also the David H. Burrows Professor Emeritus at Virginia Tech, where he served the Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Virginia Tech College of Engineering in various capacities. His principal area of focus was in construction engineering and management, where he taught at undergraduate, graduate and executive levels and completed several notable research projects.
Prior to his work at Virginia Tech, Mike was on the faculty of the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where he served as Civil Engineering Department Head for six years and as Assistant Director at the Graduate School of Business for six years prior. He has enjoyed a lifetime in the construction industry of working on projects in Zimbabwe, Malawi and South Africa.
Mike is a consultant for various companies in the areas of construction equipment, estimating, cost engineering and contract dispute resolution. He is academic advisor to the Association of Construction Equipment Managers. He is also the author of Construction Equipment Economics and leads in the design and presentation of the Construction Equipment Management Program.
Mike holds a BS in Civil Engineering, an MBA from the University of Cape Town and a PhD from the University of Stellenbosch. He is a member of the National Academy of Construction and the Virginia Tech Academy of Teaching Excellence. Mike is a Fellow of the South African Institution of Civil Engineers. He has received numerous awards, including the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award, the Basil Reid Gold Medal for contributions to construction and the ASCE Peurifoy Award for contributions to construction research.
