The paving crew consists of laborers, roller operators, screed operators and paver operators. From shoveling asphalt to placing and compacting it, our paving team uses a variety of techniques and equipment to pave roads, streets, parking lots and more.
Paving Laborer
The Paving Laborer performs a wide variety of manual tasks, including:
- Shoveling and raking stone and asphalt to grade
- Using hand held compaction tools
- Matching and finishing asphalt paving joints evenly
- Assisting the Screed Operator with maintaining the grade and screed extensions
Paving Roller Operator
- Compacts asphalt material to required density and finish using rollers of various sizes
- Performs hand tamping on edges and areas where the roller cannot reach
- Must be able to see and correct defects in surfaces being rolled, such as depressions, swales, seams, edges, etc.
- Responsible for having a thorough understanding of various aspects of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, mix designs, job specifications, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving
Screed Operator
- Responsible for operating the screed from a standing position on a platform attached to the paver or walking alongside
- Uses the screed to lay asphalt material to project specifications including but not limited to depth, width, and grade. When not operating the screed, the operator performs laborer duties
- Must be able to detect and correct defects in surfaces, seams and edges
- Responsible for having a thorough understanding of all aspects of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, mix designs, job specifications, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving
Paver Operator
- Responsible for operating the asphalt paver, and assists the supervisor in determining the pattern and sequence of the paving operations
- Directs the trucks delivering asphalt to the paver, alerting the driver to overhead obstacles and signaling instructions
- Removes asphalt material that may be sticking to conveyors, augers and other parts of the paver
- Cleans equipment as necessary during and after work is performed following proper lockout/tag-out procedures
